Curing Coated Prints

Proper curing is essential for proper finishing and presentation of the print. Curing the coating is also a very important factor for longevity of the print. We must keep in mind that we are dealing with water as the solvent in the coating, and it evaporates more slowly than regular solvents.  85% of the water must be evaporated from the coated print before the coating can begin to cure.  The parameters below are true and common for all water-based products.
     • Curing cannot be done in the dark.
     • The key factor is 15 minutes of initial “flash time” @ 72° F and 50% RH. No heat.
     • The next factor is the time for the coating to flow together.  A bonding and curing happens on the
molecular level, which requires an additional 15 minutes.
• At this point accelerated curing can be performed.
• Un-accelerated, full-cure time is 1 week @ 72 degrees and 50% RH.
